Biotin is also known as Vitamin H. Biotin deficiencies include hair thinning, loss of hair color, hair loss, and rashes around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Severe deficiencies can lead to neurological problems such as depression, lethargy, and hallucinations. Biotin is added to almost all vitamin compounds and infant formulas to promote growth of healthy scalp, hair, and nails. It is available in small quantities in most foods, and deficiencies are generally rare. Biotin is a B vitamin which acts as a co-factor in various enzymatic reactions in the body; it assists in metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.
