Digestion
Bromelains are a group of enzymes isolated from the stem of the pineapple plant, Ananus cosumus. The protein digesting enzymes (proteolytic) of Bromelain are responsible for the digestion (lysis) of proteins into peptons and single amino acids. On the molecular scale, the digestive action of Bromelain is amazingly rapid and effective: a single enzyme molecule can split 30,000 chemical bonds per second and release the same number of amino acids from a protein. Bromelain can be recommended as a digestive aid for patients suffering from high acid conditions. It can replace pepsin, pancreatin or papain preparations. Bromelain is the least allergenic of all available digestive aids.

Bromelains and Heart
More and more studies are pointing to inflammation in the cardiovascular walls as a likely contributor to heart attacks. Bromelain had been used for many years, previous to such findings, by several prominent European doctors for heart health. Now that supporting evidence is available, more and more alternative care practitioners are looking towards inflammation support as possible non-toxic methods to support heart health. Bromelains and Healing
In addition to being proteolytic, Bromelain enzymes have two other physiological actions: 1) a spreading factor and 2) escharase activity. The spreading factor helps chemicals spread into body tissues and it even increases the uptake of nutrients or drugs by the brain.

The escharase enzyme is the most stable of the group. Escharase is responsible for the inflammatory, ulcer and edema supportive effects of Bromelain. Escharase was found to be very effective in the removal of dead skin tissues caused by burns, hence its name, escharase.

In most cases, wound healing is accelerated and scar tissue formation is reduced.
