What is Serotonin?
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates appetite, mood, sexual desire, and sleep. Occasionally, individuals may not properly receive the neurotransmission signals for a variety of reasons, one of which may be that not enough serotonin is produced.
5HTP and Mood
Increasing levels of 5HTP may help with mood including mood changes caused by hormonal fluctuations or daily nervousness.
Suggested Dosage: 50 -100 mg, 2 times daily with food
Both tryptophan and serotonin are precursors to sleep.
Suggested dosage: 100 - 300 mg, 45 minutes before sleep, on an empty stomach
Serotonin is linked to the body's sensing of hunger and/or starvation. Reduced levels of serotonin are reportedly linked to craving of large amounts of carbohydrate rich foods in between meals (snacking!).
Suggested Dosage: 50 mg, 3x's daily, 20 minutes before eating
Interactions/Precautions 5HTP may interfere or interact with anti-depressant medications including SSRI's. Avoid 5HTP when taking Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Sibutramine, Sumatriptan, Tramadol, Venlafaxine, Zolmitriptan, Zolpidem. This list is not exhaustive. Consult a physician if taking SSRI's, MAO inhibitors or any kind of anti-depressant medication.
