Black Cohosh has been approved by the German E Commission for normal premenstrual discomfort and menopausal ailments. The recommended dose of 40 mg is to be used for a limited time only (six months). Black Cohosh has a long history of traditional use. Sixteenth century physicians used it to make menstrual periods more regular, and likewise it was used in North America for female gynecological support. Black Cohosh was originally used by North American Indians for its anti-inflammatory actions and tonic effects on the uterus.
There is much more scientific support for the use of soy isoflavones for nutritional support during menopause than for other phytoestrogens or plant polyphenols, such as red clover. The combination of Black Cohosh and soy isoflavones may modulate the activity of the female hormone estrogen in the body (phytoestrogen effects) and have been described as assisting in the improvement of unpleasant symptoms, such as hot flashes, that occur before, during and after menopause. The soy isoflavone genistein may provide nutritional support for healthy bones and is antiangiogenic (interferes with unwanted blood vessel growth).
