Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring, low-toxicity, organic sulfur-containing compound that has become a strong candidate in alternative health care for its anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing properties.
Interest in applying oral MSM to the treatment of pain and tissue destruction in osteoarthritis began with recognition of the high concentrations of sulfur present in normal human connective tissue.
Animal studies have reported diminished sulfur content in arthritic cartilage and reduced joint deterioration in arthritic mice given MSM. Recently, the effects of 2250 mg/day of MSM were compared to placebo in a randomized, double-blind study of 16 patients with chronic joint discomfort. MSM supplementation resulted in pain reduction by 60% and 82% after four and six weeks respectively, while corresponding reductions in the placebo group were only 20% and 18%.
Double-blind research has demonstrated that MSM is superior to placebo for relieving chronic joint discomfort .
