Product Description
Detoxication Factors offers comprehensive nutritional support for Phase I and II detoxification pathways. Hepatic detoxification pathways transform foreign chemicals (xenobiotics) and endotoxins from poorly eliminated fat-soluble molecules into less toxic, water-soluble compounds that can be readily eliminated. In order to function properly, these pathways require nutritional conjugating agents, antioxidants and cofactors.

Developed to support healthy Phase I and II detoxification pathways in the liver, Integrative Therapeutic's Detoxication Factors contains select amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.† This time-tested formula is available in easy-to-use capsules that can be taken for everyday support as well as during periods of increased oxidative stress.†

Detoxication Factors contains:
•Natural antioxidants: a family of nutrients that have been clinically shown to defend against oxidation and free radical damage†
•Conjugating agents: compounds that absorb and/or convert fat-soluble toxins for elimination
•Nutritional cofactors: vitamins, minerals, enzymes, botanical extracts, and other nutrients that participate in the dynamics of tissue repair and restoration

How Does It Work?

The human liver is responsible for numerous biologic activities, including the detoxification of harmful substances. To successfully eliminate the wide variety of substances it is exposed to each day, the liver first filters the bloodstream to remove large toxins, including bacteria, endotoxins, and antigen-antibody complexes, and then utilizes enzyme pathways to detoxify smaller compounds.1 During Phase I detoxification, various chemical reactions change both exogenous substances (e.g., prescription medications and pesticides) and endogenous toxins (e.g., hormones) into water-soluble molecules. In Phase II detoxification, the liver conjugates (or binds) glutathione and other protective compounds to these chemicals making them less harmful.2

During oxidation, reduction, and other Phase I chemical reactions, free radicals, highly active and unstable molecules are produced. While free radical formation is both normal and necessary, exposure to excessive amounts of toxins will induce Phase I enzymes to create huge amounts of free radicals. Unless this process is stopped or slowed by available antioxidants, chain reactions of free radical formations will result.

The most important cellular antioxidant for neutralizing free radicals is glutathione, a nutrient that plays a critical role in both Phase I and Phase II detoxification.† When the liver is exposed to high levels of saturated fats, exhaust fumes, pesticides, and paints, and other known inducers of Phase I detoxification enzymes, the resulting free radicals will deplete the available glutathione. This in turn, causes Phase II processes to stop or slow down, significantly increasing the toxic load.

Antioxidants are a category of nutrients that work in a variety of ways to reduce free radical damage, including the direct quenching of free radicals, the regeneration of fellow antioxidants, and the protection of cell membranes.† For the liver's detoxification activities to function effectively, a continuous supply of specific vitamins, minerals, plant compounds, enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients is necessary.†

The following provides information on how the antioxidants in Detoxication Factors™ provide superior support of healthy detoxification activities.†

Phase I Nutritional Support

Antioxidants and Detoxification Activities

Reduced glutathione (GSH)
Most researchers consider GSH to be the most versatile and powerful of all antioxidants.† The highest concentration of GSH is found in the liver where it plays important roles in the detoxification of toxins.† Found in white blood cells, GSH fights the free radicals that these important immune cells naturally generate.† Glutathione also prevents the formation of free radical chain reactions and is vital in the regeneration of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E.† Levels of GSH naturally decline with age and during times of intense oxidation and free radical formation.†

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC)
As a precursor to the body's own GSH synthesis, NAC promotes healthy detoxification and elimination of intestinal endotoxins - the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria.†

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
While CoQ10 works in several ways to support human health, as an antioxidant it protects cholesterol from oxidative damage - a process that is vitally important for heart health.† By protecting the gums or periodontal tissues from free radical damage, CoQ10 also supports the oral cavity's detoxification activities.†

Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays an important role in the liver's detoxification activities.† The lining of the intestinal tract depends on vitamin C to stay healthy.† Vitamin C is also an important factor in the body's detoxification of mercury and other heavy metals.†

Vitamin E
The term vitamin E actually refers to a family of compounds found in certain plant oils and the leaves of green vegetables. The form of vitamin E found in humans, alpha-tocopherol, is regulated by the liver, where it's secreted into circulating lipoproteins for delivery to target tissues. As an antioxidant, vitamin E is well known for its ability to protect lipoproteins from oxidation and cell membranes from damage by quenching free radicals.†

As an antioxidant needed for Phase I detoxification, selenium is especially important in the liver's ability to eliminate arsenic.† As a cofactor, selenium, along with vitamin C, supports glutathione production.† Selenium also supports cellular function, helping them regain healthy cell cycling activity.†

Phase I Herbal Support

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that's found in green tea, red cabbage, tomatoes, strawberries, cherries, green beans, grapes, and many other foods. While quercetin effectively protects cells and tissues against oxidation, scavenges free radicals, and supports healthy cell development, it is most recognized for the unique way it enhances liver enzymes in the detoxification process.†

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)
Extensive laboratory research and well-designed clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of silymarin, the active compound in milk thistle. Milk thistle's effectiveness in supporting the liver's detoxification processes is due in part to the liver's unique recirculation of silymarin.† This results in higher concentrations of silymarin in liver cells than in the bloodstream. Silymarin has a direct effect on the membrane of liver cells, keeping harmful substances out and allowing beneficial nutrients to enter.† Silymarin also stimulates healthy liver cell development.†

Phase II detoxification processes include amino acid conjugation, methylation, sulfination, and glucuronidation for the protection of vital cellular components. The following table provides information on the Phase II supportive ingredients found in Detoxication Factors™.†

Phase II Nutritional Support

Conjugating Agents and Detoxification Activities

Calcium D-glucarate
Calcium D-glucarate (CDG) is a precursor of glucarolactone (GL), which inhibits the enzyme, ƒÒ-glucuronidase. Research has found that CDG supplementation increases the net elimination of toxins and steroid hormones via glucuronidation; calcium d-glucarate has also been shown in several studies to support healthy cellular proliferation.†

Reduced glutathione (GSH)
Adequate amounts of GSH result in increased elimination of toxins and steroid hormones via glucuronidation.† GSH has been shown in several studies to support healthy cell structures.†

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC)
Sulfination is another important conjugation reaction, and represents an effective means to decrease the activity of toxic agents. In addition to detoxifying substances, sulfination is important in the metabolism of endogenous compounds, such as catecholamine, some steroids, and bile acids. By supporting Phase II sulfination and GSH conjugation, NAC supports cellular health and aids in excretion of toxins.†

Vitamin B-6
Also needed for critical sulfination reactions, vitamin B-6 acts a cofactor in the sulfination of homocysteine to nontoxic cysteine.†

Vitamin B-12 Folic acid
Methylation is a common conjugation reaction. Methyl groups are added to many exogenous and endogenous compounds to reduce their toxicity. Vitamin B-12 and folic acid are required as nutritional cofactors for methylation reactions.†

Glycine TaurineGlutamine
Amino acid conjugation primarily utilizes glycine, glutamine, and taurine. Glutamine, a conditionally essential amino acid, is involved in the detoxification of ammonia; taurine is needed for bile acid conjugation.†

Ornithine aspartate
Clinical trials of ornithine aspartate have shown it supports healthy ammonia levels, healthy mental status, and healthy clinical parameters especially with regard to liver health and function.†

Formulated to support hepatic detoxification, Detoxication Factors™ offers comprehensive nutritional support for Phase I and II detoxification pathways.† This physician-formulated, time-tested formula provides the select amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and trace elements shown in research to support healthy detoxification.†
