•Supplies vitamins, minerals, and herbs that help the adrenal glands function at optimal levels in times of stress†
•Supports the body's immune system†
•Provides non-stimulant adrenal support†
The adrenal glands, situated just above the kidneys, are triangular-shaped organs that consist of two regions. The adrenal medulla (the inner core) secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine (adrenaline). The adrenal cortex (the tissue surrounding the medulla) secretes over 30 hormones, such as aldosterone, cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). All these hormones are used to regulate functions in the body, including energy production, immunity, heart rate, and the stress response.1,2 Commonly known as the “stress hormone,” cortisol plays a key role in the regulation of blood pressure, the conversion of protein into glucose, the inhibition of inflammation, and in the regulation of the immune system. The release of cortisol from the adrenal glands is regulated by the pituitary gland. Low cortisol levels trigger the pituitary to release the stimulating hormone adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), which in turn prompts the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol.3 At a basal rate, human adrenal glands normally produce about 20 mg of cortisol each day, but with sustained stimulation, that output increases dramatically.4 A constant state of stress depletes the body's coping mechanisms, one of them being support of the adrenal glands and cortisol production. Given the pace of modern life, it's not surprising that many individuals feel fatigued and worn out. Some of the signs of built up stress may include indigestion, lack of energy, appetite changes, anger, racing thoughts, and hypersensitivity.5 Because of the link between stress and adrenal gland function, fatigue and lack of energy associated with the cumulative effect of stress is sometimes called “adrenal fatigue” or “adrenal burnout.”
How Does It Work?
The key ingredients in Adrenal Complex provide the following benefits: Ingredient Benefit
Beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, is an antioxidant and free radical fighter.† An important immune system booster, vitamin A stimulates white blood cell production.†6 Vitamin A supports the function of heart mitochondria (energy-producing cells) and maintains the general health and vigor of epithelial cells.†8
Since it is not stored in the body, vitamin C must be replenished each day. It is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system; an antioxidant and free radical fighter.†9 It has been shown to help maintain connective tissue and boost the immune system, which may need extra support during periods of stress.†10,11
An essential component in the production of coenzyme A, a vital catalyst that is required for the conversion of carbohydrates, fats, and protein into energy.†12,13,14 Pantothenic acid also is used in the manufacture of stress-related hormones in the adrenal glands.†15
Many aspects of cellular metabolism are zinc dependent.†16 Supports healthy immune system; supports healthy enzyme processes; supports healthy immune response.†17,18,19
Adrenal tissues can be rich sources of nutrients, enzymes and other substances that support adrenal metabolism and physiological function.†20,21,22
One of the most important constituents of licorice is glycyrrhizin, which breaks down into glycyrrhizic or glycyrrhetinic acid. This compound inhibits the breakdown of cortisol produced by the body, helping support a balanced level of this important hormone.†23,24Glycyrrhizic acid's mechanism of action is through the inhibition of 11-ƒÒ-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.† This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of cortisol to cortisone.† It also inhibits the metabolism of cortisol, and minimizes the binding of cortisol to mineralcorticoid receptors.†25
In laboratory tests, subjects given eleuthero had increased stamina.†26 By promoting healthy adrenal gland function, eleuthero has also been used to increase energy levels and reduce fatigue.†27,28
The non-stimulant ingredients in Adrenal Complex help to gently support and regulate adrenal function and hormone production while boosting the immune system and increasing energy.†
