In my experience, I would have to say that most of the time, ejecting it isn't really that bad, there is always a risk, but most of the time, you'll be fine and so will your files. It's only in danger if the drive you have has been damaged, or if you are saving your files and you suddenly pull. Then you may have some issues with it. Otherwise, if you can't eject it, just pull it.
